Justin Davey (Chair) & Stephen McConville (Finance Director) to step off BFUA Board

Dear Members,

Justin Davey (Chair) and Stephen McConville (Finance Director) have given notice of an intention to step down from their respective roles at the 2020 Annual General Meeting. Both will still be around in 2021, but in different capacities.

Please see below messages from Justin and Stephen.

Justin Davey
I am writing in the lead up to our AGM on November 30 to advise of my intention to step away from the BFUA board in 2021 and my position as Chair. Although this is mostly due to business and family commitments, I also think it is important that new places become available on the board for those wanting to offer their services, hence the timing of this message.

Although I will go into greater detail at the AGM, I would like to thank all members for the support they have shown me as Chair during the past two years. I also need to thank my fellow board members and Billy Mitchell for the work they have done supporting me in keeping the operations of the BFUA ticking, especially during the last 7 months which have been particularly challenging.

Given the great skill set and positive attitude of the incumbent board, I have no hesitation in leaving the BFUA in their hands, along with any new members elected for 2021. I still intend to be involved next year, and will offer any guidance to the new board throughout the transition. I would encourage anyone who has thought about being involved at board level to consider nominating for a position.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the AGM.

Regards, JD

After nearly 20 years on and off the BFUA Board (mostly on!) I’ve decided it’s time to have a break and step down from the Finance Director role.

It’s been a great honour to serve on the Board for a long period of time.  While the job sometimes has its challenges, I’ve always thoroughly enjoyed it.

Over the last couple of years I’ve started to think about a succession plan. As I’ve said at a few meetings, I’m not sick of the job, but I think the job is a bit sick of me. It will be good to have a new person in the seat and a fresh set of eyes on the books after such a long time.

Brent Irvin has nominated for the position and, if he is successful, I have no doubt he will do a tremendous job for the Association. Brent’s been a close friend of mine for about thirty years, and I will certainly still be around to help him wherever I can.  Nearly twenty years is a lot of experience to be losing from the Board too, so I will be available to consult with the new Board on any matter where my knowledge of “history” might be helpful.

Thanks to everyone I've served with on the Board over that time.  I'd like to pay tribute to Justin Davey who is also stepping aside, for his terrific work as Chair over the last couple of years.  The current Board has done an outstanding job in very trying circumstances, and the members are in very good hands going into 2021.

A year like 2020 is probably not the best way to bow out for good, so I’m sure I’ll be back again at some stage for another stint on the Board. Can’t wait for 2021 and hopefully getting back to “normal”.

Kind regards,
Stephen McConville

IMPORTANT BFUA Training Update & Information

Dear Umpires,

As training has been suspended, the BFUA coaches are working together to continue supporting our umpires in preparation for the 2020 season. We aim to provide everyone with necessary resources for both physical preparation and individual learning from afar, and we appreciate your involvement here.

Given the current circumstances prevent us from training as a group, umpires are asked to take responsibility for their own physical fitness, and are advised to prepare for the season as normal. To date, we've had a fantastic pre-season program run by Ben Rofe and David Taylor, and I would encourage you to build on this by continuing to exercise frequently. Attached you will find a training program that has been created to guide you on the type of exercise you should be undertaking at this time of year. If you have any questions regarding this program please direct them to Ben Rofe on 0498 186 493 or accountception@hotmail.com. Ultimately you will the only one monitoring your fitness level during this time, so use this as an opportunity to build your self-motivation and resolve.

From a coaching perspective, I have attached a goal setting activity for all umpires - field, boundary and goal - to complete over the next two weeks. You are required to set yourself a SMART, individual goal for season 2020 around your umpiring and then share it with your discipline coach. This will then enable us to support you in your development this year. Please complete the attached sheet and email to your respective coaches.

We ask that you complete this goal-setting activity prior to Friday 27 March.

Thank you very much for your understanding and cooperation during this time. If you have any queries or concerns please don't hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

Billy Mitchell I Director of Coaching, BFUA

Welcome back for season 2020!

Dear Members,

On behalf of the board, I just wanted to give a quick update and reminder that we are now just under a week away from our first training night next Wednesday at Tunbridge Oval, Ballarat Grammar commencing at 6pm.

As expected all 4 of our main coaches in Billy Mitchell, Paul Clark, Darryl Biggin and Brodie Bennett will be returning for 2020 and are looking forward to taking the group to the next level in their second year as a coaching unit. We will also have some exiting announcements on the night about our fitness and training structure.

We would love to see as many new members attend as possible, so make sure you invite anyone who may be interested in umpiring along on the night and keep sharing our social media posts regarding recruitment.

PRACTICE MATCHES

Practice matches will commence in February so please let your coach know if you are available for games over the coming weeks and preseason period. This is a good way to blow out the cobwebs and gain some match fitness.

This year practice match appointments will be made via Schedula, therefore umpires need to be registered and have their availability updated in order to be selected for matches.

We are looking forward to seeing a big turnout next week!

Regards,

Justin Davey
