The Women & Girls Umpire Experience Hub 2025 is set to take place at Mars Stadium on Wednesday, April 2nd, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. This event is a fantastic opportunity for women, girls, and non-binary individuals to explore the world of umpiring in a supportive and welcoming environment. Whether you're a beginner looking to learn the basics or an experienced umpire seeking to refine your skills, this session will provide valuable insights, hands-on activities, and the chance to connect with others passionate about officiating.

With a focus on inclusivity and skill development, the Umpire Experience Hub aims to break barriers and encourage greater participation in umpiring. Participants will have the chance to learn from experienced officials, gain confidence in their decision-making, and discover the many pathways available in the umpiring community. No prior experience is necessary—just bring enthusiasm and a willingness to give it a go!

Brian Edwards awarded BFUA Life Membership

The Ballarat Football Umpires Association (BFUA) is proud to announce the awarding of Life Membership to Brian Edwards, a distinguished member whose contributions have significantly shaped our community.

Brian Edwards has been an integral part of the BFUA for over two decades, during which he has umpired nearly 500 games, including four BFL Senior Grand Finals and numerous interleague games as a field umpire. His expertise and dedication have earned him a well-deserved reputation for excellence within the umpiring community.

In his early career, Brian displayed exceptional promise as a field umpire, earning the prestigious Golden Whistle award. His talent and commitment were further recognised when he trialled for the VFL list, showcasing his potential at a higher level of competition.

Beyond his on-field accomplishments, Brian has been a steadfast mentor to developing umpires. His willingness to share his knowledge and advocate for upcoming members has had a lasting impact on the growth and development of our association.

Brian's contributions extend beyond the field. In the early days of his involvement, he and his father took it upon themselves to repaint the change rooms used on Wednesday nights, and he personally constructed the ramp and railings for entry into our social rooms. These efforts are a testament to his dedication and commitment to improving the facilities for all members.

Brian's leadership was also evident during his tenure on the BFUA Board in 2012 and 2013. His guidance and support in various initiatives, particularly around recruitment and umpire development, required significant personal time and dedication. His efforts during this period were instrumental in steering the association towards a brighter future.

Above all, Brian embodies the core values of the BFUA: Respect, Support, Integrity, and Resilience. His unwavering commitment to these trademarks has made him a role model for all umpires and a pillar of our community.

Peter has umpired over 150 Ballarat Senior games as a field umpire, showcasing his skills and commitment to the sport. His expertise was particularly evident during the two Ballarat Senior Grand Finals he officiated in 2017 and 2018. These matches highlighted Peter's ability to perform under pressure and maintain the highest standards of umpiring excellence.

For over a decade, Peter has been a mentor to our developing umpires, guiding and nurturing the next generation of umpires. His dedication to mentorship was recognised in 2022 when he was awarded the Mentor of the Year at our Presentation Evening. Peter's tireless work in supporting young umpires has been instrumental in their growth, and he continues to play a crucial role in the junior competition, shaping the umpires of tomorrow.

He served on the board for four years, from 2015 to 2018, during which he played a vital role in advancing our association and steering us towards becoming the modern organisation we are today. Seven Experience Hubs are set to open across Victoria this year, offering umpires a valuable opportunity to connect, learn, and be inspired. The inaugural session of the Women & Girls Umpire Experience Hub will take place at City Oval Ballarat on Monday, March 18th from 6pm-8pm.

What to Expect:

Hosted by the AFL Victoria Female Experience Team, these hubs will feature a series of sessions throughout 2024, both in-person and online. The aim is to provide a platform for women and girls in umpiring to come together and benefit from shared experiences and insights.

Ally Steenhuis Joins BFUA Board

The Ballarat Football Umpires Association (BFUA) is excited to welcome Ally Steenhuis to its board, marking a positive step as it seeks to increase female representation in its leadership. Ally's journey into umpiring began in 2020, where she found herself warmly welcomed into a supportive community despite lacking prior experience in football.

Starting as a boundary umpire, Ally dedicated three seasons before venturing into field umpiring in 2023. Her hard work paid off with senior appointments in both the Central Highlands Football League (CHFL) and the Ballarat Football League (BFL), showcasing her talent and dedication.

As part of Ally’s board portfolio, she has been appointed as the BFUA Women and Girls Umpiring Liaison, a role that connects her to AFL Victoria and other female counterparts across the state. In this position, she will focus on fostering inclusivity within the association, building relationships and supporting the BFUA to increase women and girls in its ranks.

BFUA Chair Deb Sleep said Ally’s appointment was a testament to her professionalism and passion for umpiring, and in particular, her leadership in creating a welcoming environment for women and girls in the BFUA.

“Ally is a welcome addition to the board, and we know she will represent both young people and women and girls with enthusiasm and compassion” Sleep said.

During the offseason, Ally enjoys spending time with loved ones and indulging in her passion for cricket. Her diverse interests and commitment to community engagement make her a valuable addition to the BFUA board.

Ballarat Football Umpires Association (BFUA) Celebrates Debut of Two Female Umpires in BFNL Senior Competition

The Ballarat Football Umpires Association (BFUA) is proud to announce and celebrate a significant achievement as two promising female field umpires, Ally Steenhuis and Kate Tomkins, make their debut in the Ballarat Football Netball League (BFNL) senior competition.

This marks another milestone for women's participation in the football community and is a testament to the ongoing efforts in promoting inclusivity and diversity within umpiring.

Ally Steenhuis, who began her umpiring journey as a boundary umpire in 2021, has rapidly transitioned into field umpiring and impressed widely for her composure, skill and professionalism. Earlier this year, she made her debut in the Central Highlands Football League and has comfortably handled the rigors of senior football. When asked about her aspirations, Ally expressed her eagerness to progress further in her umpiring career while also remaining devoted to community football and personal fitness.

Kate Tomkins, another promising umpire, commenced her umpiring career in 2015 in the Western Border Football League as a boundary umpire. With four years of experience as a field umpire in various leagues, including senior football in the Western Border League, Central Highlands Football League, and Maryborough Castlemaine District Football League, Kate's dedication shines through. Her involvement in umpiring was influenced by her family's umpiring legacy, and she values the fitness and rewards that come with the role.

Ally and Kate's debut in the BFNL senior games brings excitement and pride not only to them but also to the entire umpiring community. Kate, in particular, expresses her enthusiasm for being a trailblazer and contributing to the advancement of women's involvement in football umpiring this level.

Billy Mitchell, the BFUA's Head of Umpiring Operations, commended both Ally and Kate on their promotion and praised their consistent efforts and continuous improvement throughout the season. He stated, "Kate and Ally's promotion to BFNL senior football is a well-deserved recognition of their hard work and dedication. They have received tremendous feedback from umpire coaches, fellow umpires, and football clubs across the leagues, which speaks to their qualities as umpires and young women. We wish them the best for the weekend ahead, and know they will do a fantastic job.”

Julian Pinder Honoured with BFUA Life Membership

The Ballarat Football Umpires Association (BFUA) has bestowed Life Membership upon Julian Pinder, celebrating his remarkable contributions to the umpiring community.

For the past four years, Julian has served as the Assistant Field Umpire Coach, sharing his knowledge and experience to nurture the next generation of umpires. He has also been actively involved in various BFUA fundraising events, including the BNS Ball and sausage sizzles, where he has always lent a helping hand.

Not only is Julian a fantastic umpire, but he has also been a vibrant presence at the Whistleblower social function, taking on the role of Master of Ceremonies for the past two seasons. His charisma and ability to make the event enjoyable for everyone have made him a beloved member of the umpiring community.

With five BFNL Senior Grand Finals under his belt, including two as a boundary umpire and three as a field umpire, Julian has proven his abilities under pressure. His calmness and accuracy on the field have earned him the admiration and respect of players and fellow umpires.

Les Vearing's umpiring journey began in 1999, and he umpired for a decade with the Maryborough umpiring group before their merger with the BFUA. Les played a vital role in ensuring the successful integration of both umpiring groups, leveraging his leadership as the Secretary and Treasurer of the Maryborough umpires. Pride as family set to umpire together

It’s little surprise Damian Irvin got into umpiring.

Already a footy lover, the 16-year-old's father, Brent, is a well-decorated umpire in the Ballarat region. Older brother Hamish debuted as a field umpire in the Ballarat Football Netball in 2019, aged just 16. This weekend, it all comes full circle. Damian will be a field umpire in just in his third BFNL seniors game in North Ballarat's clash against Darley with his brother and his father by his side for the first time. He is also part of the V/Line umpire academy and harbours ambitions of umpiring in the state league - a far cry from where he first learned the trade.

"I played footy as well and did a bit of boundary umpiring with the Ballarat Swans and quite enjoyed that. So when I saw my brother and Dad (umpiring), I thought, 'yeah, I can do that too'," Damian said. Hamish Irvin began umpiring in 2017 and debuted as a field umpire in the BFNL seniors in 2019. In total he's officiated 130 games with the BFUA, 86 those as a field umpire. After moving to Geelong last year to study, he travelled to continue to umpire in Ballarat. However, this year he has been in the middle for Geelong Football League seniors matches.

Father Brent began with the BFNL in 1990, firstly as a boundary umpire. He graduated through the ranks as a field umpire in the TAC Cup and the AFL reserves. He returned to Ballarat and came back to umpiring at the local level once Hamish began running the boundary. "It's obviously a proud moment for us all and my wife as well. We're pretty proud of the achievement the boys have been able to make," Brent said.
